If you were to ask the next 10 people you met to name a casino game, I bet the vast majority would say Roulette. Thanks to its spinning wheel and varied odds, Roulette has undoubtedly become the most iconic of all casino games.

US and European

However, did you know that there are several different versions of this game? Here we take a quick look at the two main versions, European and American roulette.

The origins of the game

Roulette was invented by the French mathematician and philosopher, Blaise Pascal, in the 17th Century. Therefore the original and most widely-recognised version of the game is European roulette. However, as the game started to gain popularity in the US, a second and slightly different version of roulette started to develop. So, let’s take a look at the differences between the two.

The numbers game

The single biggest difference between the two games is that American roulette has an extra number – the green ‘00’. This means that the American roulette table has a total of 38 numbers and the European roulette a total of 37.

Therefore the breakdown of the total numbers in each game is as follows:

  • European roulette has 18 red numbers, 18 black numbers and one green number
  • American roulette has 18 red numbers, 18 black numbers and two green numbers

American roulette

The house edge

To clarify, the house edge is defined as the casino profit, expressed as a percentage of the player’s original bet.

By introducing the additional ‘00’ number, the house edge on American roulette is nearly double that of European roulette. Statistically, the house edge of the two respective games looks like this:

  • American roulette = 5.26% house edge
  • European roulette = 2.70% house edge

European Roulette

Despite this discrepancy, the bets and pay-outs of each game remain exactly the same – i.e. 1 to 1 for a red or black bet and 35 to 1 for a straight number bet. Thus, the additional green number in American roulette serves only as a technique for decreasing your odds of winning.

European roulette has ‘call bets’

In case you don’t know, ‘call bets’ are prearranged bets that you can make to cover specific section of the roulette table. You can find a full list of ‘call bets’ here – however each of these can only be made while playing European roulette.

American roulette’s unique bet

American roulette only has one type of bet that is unique to it – the ‘five number bet’. This type of bet allows you to cover the numbers – 1, 2, 3, 0 and 00.

To conclude

So there you have it, the main differences between American and European roulette. Because of the better house edge, many people who are well versed in playing both games prefer European to American roulette.

To conclude

Having said that, roulette is a game of chance – so there’s every possibility you could win playing either game. So why not visit Simba Games and try your luck on theAmerican or European roulette tables – the choice is yours.
